Women's Suffrage

Radical or Subdued Strategies?

Alice Paul and Carrie Chapman Catt both used effective strategies to gain women the right to vote. Alice Paul, president of the NWP (National Women's Party) was relentless and had very aggressive strategies. They had a lot of clever publicity stunts (including picketing the white house and being sent to jail) and non-violent confrontation such as parades, pageants and speaking on the streets. Alice Paul herself went on a hunger strike in order to help gain publicity. As for  NAWSA (National American Women's Suffrage Association), their organization was more subdued. Catt and NAWSA preferred to use strategies such as lobbying, handing out buttons and working at conventions. Catt did her best to start having workshops at conventions in order to accomplish more. The workshops consisted of discussion groups which helped the convention receive maximum press coverage.
